The Writing Studio's Basic Workshop for Filmmakers is ideal for Independent filmmakers, writers, directors and producers and takes place on Saturday, February 20 and 27 from 9am until 5pm at Screen Africa, Highlands North.
Presented by the Cape-Town based The Writing Studio, a leading independent training initiative, and hosted by Screen Africa, the weekend workshop explores the craft of filmmaking and the art of being a film director.
The 2-day workshop takes aspirant filmmakers on a journey through the filmmaking process from pre-production, production and into post-production. The workshop is designed to introduce the basics of film production from the viewpoint of the independent filmmaker functioning as writer, producer and director.
Our guest speaker is writer-director Craig Freimond, whose film Gums & Noses won the Apollo Film Festival Award for Best Feature in 2004; and his latest film Jozi, releases locally on February 26. He also co-created and directed two seasons of the improvised comedy series Sorted.
The workshop discusses and compares the diversity in production elements of television and film projects. The students will develop a concept in groups during the first session that they will use throughout the workshop in various exercises.
On February 20 the workshop focuses on the relationship between the writer and the producer, exploring the state of the film and television industries in South Africa and the advent and impact of Hi-definition; how to read a film; the different mediums for presentation on film or TV; the documentary; the short film and the feature film; the breakdown of the script; budgeting of films, creating a financial package, and ways of creating awareness and finding a potential audience.
On February 27 the workshop focuses on the world of the film director. It looks at the positions of a film set; who does what?; interpreting the script and creating a visual design for your project; the director and his tools; casting the players and working with actors; the director and his camera and the art of storyboarding; how to choose your crew and the organisation and communication between cast and crew; an overview of the digital post production process; and the presentation and marketing your product.
This motivational, inspirational and educational workshop is a great training ground for candidate film directors, actors and screenwriters who want to pursue a career in filmmaking, and also gives scholars and students the opportunity to make a competent choice in a career decision in the film and television industries; and to develop their independent film projects.
