CELEBRATING SADC WOMEN IN THEATRE AND DANCE FESTIVAL Are women still being sidelined in the arts? Debate and entertainment top the agenda at the Celebrating SADC Women in Theatre and Dance Festival, being held from 9 to 13 March 2010 at Newtown's Market Theatre Laboratory. Showcasing an array of dance and theatre items from across the region, as well as workshops, the festival promises to elicit robust debate around the status of women in the performing arts. JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL To celebrate a century of official relations between Japan and South Africa, a series of Japanese cultural events is being held around the country - among them A Japanese Film Festival, which takes place at Ster-Kinekor V&A Nouveau in Cape Town on 13 and 14 March, and Rosebank Nouveau from 18 to 21 March. The festival aims to introduce the public to the delicacy, nuance and depth inherent in much of the cinematic fare that is produced in that country, which local audiences may have sampled in the Oscar-winning film Departures - which recently completed a successful run at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau. FRANSCHHOEK LITERARY FESTIVAL The Franschhoek Literary Festival: Fourth Edition will hit the streets of this Winelands village starting on Friday 14 May, with another gathering of writers, editors, publishers, readers and assorted book fans who will be deep in various conversations - sometimes to applause and laughter, occasionally escalating to hot argument - until sunset on Sunday 16 May.
