Thanks for all the help and advice and continue the good work. LIEZEL VAN DER MERWE, WINNER IN FOREIGN SECTION AT THE MOONDANCE 2006 FESTIVAL FOR HER AFRIKAANS SHORT SCRIPT 'VIS'
"I wish I had done the course before starting my screenplay. It's practical advice helped me around the many basic flaws that my screenplay had and revitalised my drive and creativity as well as markedly speeding up the process. The workshop's intimate atmosphere allowed me to meet like-minded writers and realise that I am not alone in the battle we call writing. It definitely helped me focus and I now have a 110-page manuscript and an idea of what to do with it. I highly recommend the course to all beginning writers." KEVIN KRIEDEMANN, SCREENWRITER/ MANAGING EDITOR 'THE CALL SHEET'
"I was truly inspired by the workshop in a sense that I am now in a position to write, structure a proper and sellable screenplay. The way Daniel took us through out the whole session I felt like I was doing a full time script writing course. The knowledge that I now possess is greater and I will definitely make use of the tools he gave us. With people like us (script writers) he encouraged us to go and watch a lot of movies and that I found it great, because this gives us creativity to the extent that we will view the movies in another manner. In future, this will make me not to miss any of his workshops and keep up inspiring people." LUCKY NDLOVU, WHO WAS SENT BY THE NFVF TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP, AND OUR CORRESPONDENCE COURSE, AND WHOSE SHORT SCRIPT WAS SUCCESSFULLY EVALUATED BY THE WRITE AGENCY AND IS NOW IN DEVELOPMENT.
"Without guidance from The Writing Studio on the structure of the story and the discussion of ideas it is unlikely that my script would have got as far as it did..." MARIAN SHINN, WHOSE SCREENPLAY 'PHUMZILE'S BEADS', WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH THE WRITING STUDIO AND ENDED UP AS A FINALIST IN THE RENOWNED MOONDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
"I must say a big thank you to Daniel and the Writing Studio for all the help and time spent with me to get this script into shape. Also the constant update of information to keep us writers up to date with what's happening in the market place. I would never have known about Sithengi if it had not been for that fateful e-mail you sent… I also found the workshop motivational and at times I still refer back to the notes or when needing inspiration, flip open my notes and read an excerpt." BRENDA ALFORD, WHOSE SCRIPT 'THE MENDI' WAS DEVELOPED OUT OF ONE OF OUR WORKSHOPS AND THROUGH ONE-ON-ONE SESSIONS, AND WAS SELECTED AS ONE OF 14 SCRIPT TO BE PRESENTED AT THE WRITERS FORUM AT THE 8TH INTERNATIONAL SITHENGI FILM AND TELEVISION MARKET IN CAPE TOWN.
"I found it useful as a writer to understand the craft of storytelling. The workshop inspired me to finish my script 'Ren'. I subsequently applied to the Binger Institute in Amsterdam and was selected as one of their scriptwriters in 2002 with my script. I would recommend to any writer to attend The Writing Studio's workshop. It is informative, constructive and inspiring. I give the workshop a ten and say to any writer, never underestimate the value of training..." KAREN VAN SCHALKWYK, FREELANCE JOURNALIST/ CORRESPONDEND 'SCREEN AFRICA'
"I learned a tremendous amount in very pleasant circumstances.." FRANCOIS THERON, NOVELIST AND AUTHOR 'MORRISON'S JETTY' (NOMINATED FOR COMMONWEALTH WRITER'S PRIZE AND SUNDAY TIMES FICTION). THE SCREENPLAY IS NOW IN DEVELOPMENT.
"I came out of the workshop rich with information and confident and resolute in my mission to write and write..." EDDIE MOKOENA, ARTS EDITOR, SOWETAN
"A river of blocked creativity has been opened. What's left is only hard work!" JIMMY VUSI SITHOLE
"Thank you so much for the inspirational workshop, and for sharing your knowledge and passion for writing and films. My right brain has been asleep for several years and eureka! I'm back! Thanks Daniel! The course offered fantastic insight on the whole writing and filmmaking process. From the basics to the bigger picture, a wealth of information" VALERIE SMALL, SALES AND MARKETING
"The workshop not only met my expectations, it exceeded them. I now have an understanding regarding how a film is made, why it is done that way, and what makes it work / not work. I went in with a curiosity about screenwriting, and came out knowing that while writing a screenplay is not easy, it is also something I will definitely try. The biggest thing I have taken away is a vastly improved understanding of classical Three Act Structure, including all its elements and how they are melded together into a cohesive whole. I knew a little about it, but the way this was taught brought it into full focus for me. I will use this in revising my WIP ( a suspense novel), as well for the 5 minute script and any other books / screenplays I attempt in the future. I also gained a greater appreciation of how a screenwriter can use visual dynamics - was never sure before whether this was the writer or the director's domain. I also have a much greater respect for how difficult it is to write a really good screenplay, of which the story line / plot is only the beginning...I loved the whole thing. Probably the best learning experience I had this this year. I'd recommend it to anyone." LINDA BENNETT: FREELANCE WRITER, COPY EDITOR, PROOF READER
"Excellent, very informative, in fact essential to scriptwriting. I learnt the nitty-gritty of scriptwriting structure, character development, dialogue, reading movies and much more. Daniel, you were great - very knowledgeable, excellent lecturer and your lectures were very well structured. My interest or attention never flagged for a second! " MARGIE WALTER - MULTIMEDIA DESIGNER
"Your workshop was really informative - the whole atmosphere was relaxed - and yes I felt I got a lot out of it and would like to attend further workshops - I am more interested in the working of novels form of creative writing, but nevertheless felt that the weekend was well spent, and my head stuffed with very useful information." PATRICIA WILSON
"It benefited me in such a way that I can write a script in a creative way from the idea until the final draft of the script. I benefited in such a way that I can always write a good script. Questions such as the plot, format, treatment e.t.c are now answered." MOSHE MABALE, PRODUCER A/V & DVC PRODUCTIONS, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA
"I thought it was great. I really learnt allot! I loved the interaction with the fellow "students" and the passion with which u taught us. It broadened my knowledge about film and the industry in this country and abroad. I know that all that I learnt will benefit me in my future. Being a performer is not always a lucrative and constant profession, one does not always get to be that creative either, so having a definite knowledge about writing i know that when that time comes when I'm broke and out in the cold I can turn to writing with confidence. From an actors point of view I can choose scripts carefully and look at it structurally and not just as a story." HILDA CRONJE, ACTING STUDENT
"I was able to build up a dimension of screenwriting knowledge that previously lay only in books." EUGÉNE ETSEBETH, I.T. FINANCIAL CONSULTANT
"Very informative. As I am just a novice, it was very helpful. There was a good balance between theory and practical. It Gave me practical tips on how to write a screenplay. I gained industry knowledge and met a lot of people I can partner with in future." PIERRE LOMBARD, SCRIPTWRITER AND FILMMAKER
"I learnt about a whole new world and it has given me so much to think about. I am not sure if a screenplay is what I want to write, I am definitely more interested in documentaries now though feel equipped to head in this direction after the workshop. I learnt how much hard work it is to write and the amount of dedication required. I learnt how important research is and the importance of developing your own style. " PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BLC PLANT COMPANY
"I learned so much, I gave me guidelines and structure in order to write my stage production I enjoy writing but never really thought that I would do something significant with it although it is a dream of mine. This workshop, apart from the technical stuff, gave me confidence and re-assurance that there is a support structure for junior writers and helped push me in making the decision to start on my script." TANYA VAN TONDER, MARKETING SERVICES MANAGER
"I was taught much more than I had expected to learn from a workshop. I no longer feel the need to go and do a full-time course - I'd rather start writing! I really walked in knowing only that I enjoyed writing poetry and prose and had ideas in my head that I had no way of reaching - I walked out with the knowledge of how to get to those Ideas, what to do with them and how to do it! I learnt that writing is a way of life, an art that demands dedication and passion! This workshop is changing my life!" LIEZEL WERTH, RESEARCHER/ CREATIVE ASSISTANT
"Informative and extensive in developing characters and dialogue for screenplays and film. It showed me if I want to write a screenplay and what is required - where to begin and how to create and execute the concept. I learnt how to do research, character development, dialogue, scenes and sequences. And how to dedicate oneself to writing. Very in-depth, detailed points, quality and quantity was substantial." RACHEL DANIELS; CONTENT EDITOR FOR PAGE TO PICTURES PRODUCTION HOUSE (WHO PRODUCES THE TELEVISION SHOW NIGHTLIFE FOR ETV).
"My overall impression of the workshop was a very good one. I found it so encouraging to meet other people who are also becoming writers. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the workshop and yet its wonderful relaxed vibe it had. The workshop met my expectations. I was surprised how much practical advice I got out of it. Like the process of writing scene cards is helping me greatly." JUSTIN SANDMANN, SCREENWRITER
"I found the course absorbing, quite intense and very informative. After each lesson I would shuffle the new info around in my head before discussing it with my husband, who is also a TV producer. The workshop gave me a better understanding of how to construct a story and how to consider the background of characters. Although I have been writing television 'magazine style' scripts for some years, I have never written a 'drama' style script. The course gave me the knowledge to be able to do this." DOREEN THEYS, TV PRODUCER/RESEARCHER/SCRIPTWRITER
"Definitely worthwhile. It's given me a sense of how to set about writing and the benefits can be applied across a number of projects I'm working on. It's helped me fill in a lot of gaps and given me an idea of how to build a strong foundation that will sustain the writing process. I got precisely what I was looking for: guidelines for setting about writing, and a better understanding of scriptwriting as opposed to writing for other media. I found I was a great deal more motivated to keep going with what I'm doing and I have a far better idea of how to prevent myself from running out of steam a few chapters into something. What I'm most conscious of taking home with me is how to research your film, how to meet your characters and structure. " JEANNE VENTER, PRODUCTION MANAGER/SUB-EDITOR/FREELANCE WRITER/EDITOR
"I have tools and structure now to put my creativity on paper with confidence. I learned that it is possible for me to succeed in this industry. Structure and direction. I learned about the industry as a whole as well as the details I needed to get going properly. I think you are doing a great job - you know your stuff. Thank you so much!" TRACY KITCHING-- ADVERTISING SALES CONSULTANT / MODEL / SCREENWRITER
"As an artist I write intuitively, with too much creative flow and not enough understanding of structural underpinnings of my writing. The workshop, while focussing of screenwriting, gave me concrete tools to structure the novel I am working on.I learnt how to distance myself from my material by imposing a formal structure onto it. I learnt much about the 'constructed reality' of movies. I gained respect for movie makers. Very beneficial, grateful for the structural guidelines, loved watching all the movies. Came away with a new appreciation of the movie world, and a desire to try writing a screen play one day." DONVE LEE, ARTIST/ WRITER
"As an actress it assisted me in recognising how a script is written. I have also started developing my own synopsis." CONNIE CHIUME, ACTOR
"I am more confident to approach writing. The sessions were perhaps a bit intensive but that is also good cause I don't have tons of time." JONATHAN ALENSKAS, ACTOR/ 3D ANIMATOR
"Daniel, I just wanted to take the opportunity now to thank you for all the exciting and mind challenging classes you have lectured me in for the last three weeks. I am actually dreading the fact that this Saturday is my last class. I actually for once look forward to waking up in the early hours of the morning, especially on a weekend. I am very interested to get into the theatre, whether it be performing, writing or directing. So having been in your classes and seeing your enthusiasm for the medium you teach, was and still is a great way for me to look forward to the road ahead where I take the giant leap from small computer screen to big ideas and wide audiences (we'll see)." GARETH KOORZEN
"Informative and entertaining. I have a greater appreciation of the complexity of scriptwriting … a greater understanding of movies. Good tips on movies I haven't seen!" GREG MARSH, ATTORNEY
"Having re-read my notes since finishing the course, I am still finding new aspects that I have to attend to in my writing. I have started writing back-ground histories and biographies of my characters and I am constantly being made aware of the 'extensions' that these offer to my story...I have spoken with my co-conspirator on our screen play and you may well find that he deliberately takes a holiday in Cape Town to attend one of your courses. All in all, I found the course intense, but increasingly worthwhile" DR BOB FENN, A NOVELIST WHO LIVES IN BRUSSELS
"The workshop manual and how to approach writing helped. As a choreographer the impact of my "stories" improved a great deal." INGRID CARLSON,CHOREOGRAPHER AND DANCE TEACHER
"The workshop was just what I needed to make a start. Before then, I didn't know how to start on a draft (let alone a synopsis). I enjoyed the days of the workshop very much; not only because of the movies and the interesting discussions, but also because of the new friendships that were made during that time." BAZIL SWARTZ, STUDENT AT HISTORY AT UWC
"I attended the workshop as a complete beginner. I found it extremely interesting and inspiring. I feel that at any stage of my life when I finally commit myself to writing a screenplay, I will find a really helpful guide in the notes I took during the workshop." TESSA STREET, HEAD OF ADMINISTRATION FOR A CIVIL ENGINEERING CO.
"The inspiration, enthusiasm for cinema and all creative processes makes me excited every time I get a chance to witness any! Unfortunately my time in Cape Town was short-lived, due to work issues, but lucky for me your teachings won't be..." EVAN JENKINS, ADVERTISING/ SIGNWRITING, DURBAN
"It provided me with a solid framework for writing fiction, which I believe has saved me many hours of going down blind alleys. When I enrolled, I was aware of the fact that the workshop was aimed at script writers. I was interested in novel writing, but found that the workshop met my expectations adequately. Within a relatively short pace of time (15 hours over 5 weeks) it gave me a good overview of the process of writing." KOBUS VAN WYK, INFORMATION SYSTEM CONSULTANT
"I certainly benefited from the workshop. As a teacher, I had always seen writing from the point of view of a student of literature and wrote with those criteria in mind. I learned a new technique and approach suited to writing rather than reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the congenial atmosphere and camaraderie, and of course the expert technical knowledge I gained." SONJA VOGEL, RETIRED TEACHER AND WRITER
"I would like to take this opportunity once again of thanking you for opening a whole new vista, a whole new dimension that I have only dreamed existed." PETRA WIESE, MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT
"I had no or very little knowledge of the writing process. It helped me greatly in coming up with ideas, putting them into a coherent form and eventually turning it into a script. To have justification for everything you do in your script or film was a lingering theme of the course. It is probably the greatest single thing I took from the course." MARK LEONARD, IT DEVELOPMENT, MEDIA, AND DV PRODUCTION.
"I just wanted to say thank you so much for the course. I know it's not even 24 hours since it ended, but I cannot tell you what difference it has made to my life already. Please do keep up the good work." PALESA MOTAYEANE, SCRIPTWRITER/ ACTRESS
"It was very fruitful. All the important element of the screenplay were touched. The response from the people that attended the workshop was also good which made it easy for everyone to understand. It actually made me realise my capability as a writer. Now I want to develop that skill and become accomplished. and the writing studio can help me to archive that." MATOME WALTER SENYOLO
"The scriptwriting w/shop I attended is probably perfect the way it is. I found it very useful and quite enjoyable. It's a pity that it's now finished. Thanks for a cool opportunity. I enjoyed it a lot and I'm sure the other course goers did too. Look out for my first short film, coming shortly... " CHARLES MILLER - COPYWRITER
"The workshop did meet my expectations. It proved to me that anyone with an idea, and the dedication to write it down and share it with the world could do it. I found the workshop thoroughly enjoyable. The classical structure was a huge learning experience for me. I made me believe that I can write a screen play. I believe I am now equipped to write a screen play. The responsibility has now been put on my shoulders. I must do it with fun, write with passion and enjoyment. I believe you have taught me that. Time will tell if I have the discipline and dedication to complete a screenplay. Thanks again for the fantastic course." ROBERT CHRISTOPHER MUTLOW PROFESSIONAL IDLER.
