ENTOURAGE ***** (Season 1, 2, 3, 4) Have you ever wondered what is must be like to live the life of a rising star in Hollywood? How the Hollywood system operates in getting films made? This entertaining (and informative) series from HBO was created by Doug Ellin, produced by Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Doug Ellin and Larry Charles. It is daring, provocative and captivating. The entourage is that of a up-and-coming superstar in Hollywood: three guys from Queens dedicated to helping their film-star buddy navigate the absurdities and pitfalls of modern-day Hollywood, where sex, parties and super-agents rule the town. The first season is available on two discs, including revealing behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew, as well as audio commentaries with creator/executive producer and creator Doug Ellin and executive producer Larry Charles. ENTOURAGE (The Complete Fifth Season) *** Entourage's fifth season leaves our movie star in a pickle: his big Oscar shot, Medellin, is a dismal failure, and Vincent (Adrian Grenier) has burrowed away to Mexico to drown his sorrows in booze and women. How does a once-promising actor get his confidence, legitimacy, and bankability back? That's the key premise this time around, and like some of its previous seasons, is always more interesting when Vince is struggling than when he's on top. Once his crew--manager Eric (Kevin Connolly), big brother Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), agent Ari (Jeremy Piven), and driver Turtle (Jerry Ferrara)--convince Vince to get back in the game, he finds many once-welcoming doors closed. He eagerly takes a meeting with Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont (playing himself), only to feel insulted when he finds it's for a TV pilot. (His subsequent options? Appearing at a Sweet Sixteen party and doing a Benji movie.) Once a promising script about firefighters (called Smokejumpers) piques Vince's interest, ensuing episodes become a complex chess game of job-hopping, backdoor-dealing, and back-scratching, which is always Entourage's strength. As Vince watches his star fade, Grenier gets a chance to let his sunny optimism crack, even sitting in Ari's office and begging to be told he's a good actor.

FRINGE (Season 1) ***** Teleportation, mind control, astral projection, invisibility, precognition, spontaneous combustion, reanimation: these are among the peripheral sciences--or "pseudo-sciences," as one skeptic puts it--examined during the first season of Fringe, a TV drama debuting on DVD with the full first season (twenty episodes) offered on seven extras-laden discs. The notion that those phenomena could have a genuine scientific basis is intriguing enough. But co-creator J.J. Abrams (whose bulging resume as a director, writer, and producer includes Lost, Alias, and the 2009 Star Trek feature film) has even more on his mind. Along with the weird science, the series features a multi-agency task force investigating related acts of terrorism that may very well add up to a threat of unimaginable global proportions; people who are exactly what they appear to be (i.e., insane) and others who are anything but; plot twists galore; family drama, interpersonal relationships, corporate evil, cop chases... "Fringe" has a good-sized collection of special features, first and foremost, three commentary tracks, including "Bad Dreams" by episode writer/director Akiva Goldsman and executive producer Jeff Pinker. "Fringe: Deciphering the Scene" is a short (two to three minutes tops) featurette that is present for each episode that focuses on some behind-the-scenes aspect of that particular episode. "The Massive Undertaking" is a somewhat longer (around ten minutes each) segment that is present for four episodes of the series and covers more behind-the-scenes filming aspects. "Roberto Orci's Production Diary" is just what the title implies, a short video diary highlighting the filming of early episodes. It's by far the most uninteresting feature. "Evolution: The Genesis of Fringe" is a standard talking heads piece giving a nice concise origin of the series and despite containing spoilers (fortunately there is a warning to viewers on the menu of this fact), feels more like a promotional piece. "The Casting of Fringe" is a very insightful look at how all these great characters came to be. "Behind the Real Science of Fringe" features another spoiler warning as it covers almost every episode in the season briefly, discussing how the writers tried to bring some credible science to the mystery of the week. While some of their origins are very insightful and thought provoking, others are shaky and laughable at best. "Gene the Cow" and "Unusual Side Effects" make up the last featurettes, the former being a brief look at a thankless source of comic relief, while the latter is a standard gag-reel. Finally, on a handful of episodes are "Dissected Files" or in more common terms, deleted scenes. For a show already ten-minutes over the standard runtime, not a lot here is greatly missed. They are presented in rough looking, non-anamorphic format

MAD MEN (The complete first Season) **** At a time when most programs seek to dazzle viewers with big, bold concepts, the pleasures of "Mad Men" refreshingly arise almost wholly from small, impeccably detailed touches. Set in 1960, this breezy serial about Madison Avenue ad men (hence the title) circa 1960 revels in dated images of white-collar workers boozing in the boss' office, harassing female employees, smoking incessantly and openly pondering if there's a Jew anywhere in the building. Created by "The Sopranos" alum Matthew Weiner, it's a rare period drama that niftily injects shades of gray into the black-and-white TV era, warts and all. With his slicked back hair and neatly pressed suits, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is the creative mastermind at Sterling Cooper, a big time Manhattan ad agency grappling with a variety of challenges among them how to market cigarettes in light of newfangled health concerns about the product. His surroundings include a suave boss (guest star John Slattery); wide-eyed new secretary Peggy ("The West Wing" Elisabeth Moss); and an ambitious protégé (Vincent Kartheiser) eager to slice into Don's power base. In the premiere, Don not only wrestles with the Lucky strikes account but with a Jewish department store that has the temerity to desire crossing over and is run by -----gasp-----a woman (Maggie Siff). Peggy meanwhile, is viewed by various associates as fresh meat, and receives tips on how to survive as a single gal ------mostly by cozying up to the boys------from a predatory, curvy co-worker, Joan (Christina Hendricks). For those who have transformed the 50s into a nostalgic Wonderland, "Mad Men" captures just how much things have changed since the morality that governed those days. Beyond blatant anti-Semitism, sexual harassment and the assumption that a woman's place is in the home or sprawled out upon the couch, one staffer clearly appears to be gay and overcompensates by talking about nailing broads more than any of his peers. As a serialized drama, the program's situations aren't especially stirring, even with its soli, perfectly outfitted cast. The sheer atmosphere, however, proves intoxicating----from a doctor puffing away during a gynecological exam to snippets of Bob Newhart's comedy to the backdrop of the pending Nixon-Kennedy race for the White House (Sterling Cooper is weighing whether to represent Nixon) adding a pre-Camelot significance to the proceedings. Despite its understated approach, however, "Mad Men" actually strikes a profound chord, inasmuch as part of today's so-called culture war involves sifting through the tumult of the 1960s, heralded by progressives for the freedoms won but now being decried by conservatives for the standards that were eroded. In that context, the show illustrates that period's own form of excess without wagging fingers, while reminding us that before sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, there was sexual harassment, free-flowing cocktails and bluesy ballads, invariably sung by white guys.
