THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON **** Sean Penn is absolutely brilliant in this human drama. Set in 1974, it tells of an average saleman who is suffering a breakdown. Unable to lie to customers at work, he's a failure as a salesman as well as a failure as a husband. He figures the only way to give his life significance is to target the greatest liar of the age--President Richard Nixon. It also features some great performances by Naomi Watts as his wife, Jack Thompson as his boss, and Don Cheadle as his buddy. It was directed and written by Niels Muller.
THE AVIATOR *** Scorcese's plunges his audiences emotionally into the intimate world of one the loneliest men in the world, allowing us to experience the nightmare that destroyed his dreams. The drama, intrigue and romance are brilliantly contrasted with excellent production design that makes for a moving and heartfelt cinematic experience. DiCapprio is in top form as a young man driven by passion and torn apart by circumstances that he could not control, with Cate Blanchett delivering a powerhouse performance as the larger-than-life Katherine Hepburn. BREAKFAST ON PLUTO ***** Neil Jordan's superb adaptation of Pat McCabe's novel, featuring an outstanding performance by Cillian Murphy as the cross dressing rebel. Set the mid-1970s amongst the eruption of British-Irish conflicts, a fashionable young beauty ( Murphy) ambles down the street pushing a pram. GRACIE ***** If you are a fan of BBC drama, this superb romantic drama is an absolute must.Filmed as part of the BBC's Women We Loved season, featuring a trio of excellent performances from Jane Horrocks, Tom Hollander, and David Dawson, this excellent television film - which would have been better titled Gracie and Monty, gently portraying the oft troubled marriage and courtship of singing superstar, Gracie Fields, and Italian filmmaker, Monty Banks - proves to be a thoroughly entertaining, quietly eye-opening, and really rather moving work In 1939 Gracie Fields, the 'Queen of Hearts', is at the height of her success as a singer and actress and the whole nation seems to wish her a speedy recovery from cervical cancer. When World War Two breaks out, Gracie sings for the troops despite poor health, to the dismay of her fussy husband, film director Monty Banks, an Italian, born Mario Bianchi. With Italy's entry into the war Monty is in danger of being interned so Gracie consents to his moving to America whilst she tours Canada, fund-raising for the war effort. She is accused of deserting the country which made her famous and booed offstage, though she later tours battlefields as a singer. If there's one film that you have to see, it's this superb masterpiece that is a true reflection of the fears that have imprisoned us, and will definitely set your inhibitions free. WAH-WAH **** If you had to bottle all your precious childhood memories and place it on a shelf for the world to see, this would be it. It is a genuine, sincere and heartfelt. It lifts an early chapter from Richard E. Grant's own life growing up in Swaziland in the last days of the British Empire.
