PAN'S LABYRINTH
***** It is an intricate and emotionally compelling masterwork, with Del Toro magically weaving two extreme entities; the gritty realism of a country at war is perfectly contrasted with surreal fantasy, drawing us into a malevolent underworld where the dark side of human nature is reflected in a pool a radiant innocence. It is a captivating journey into the darkness of human nature, challenging the innocence of a young girl pitted against insurmountable forces of evil. Del Toro probes the horror of evil and explores a world of ultimate seduction. His dark sense of the macabre surfaces when he shows us a lavish banquet where the war torn characters quibble about ration cards. The features include a making of featurette and director's diary.  Go behind the scenes
300 (2 Disc Edition) ***** A masterpiece that celebrates the art of film and the craft of filmmaking. This is the second feature of Zach Snyder, who directed Dawn of the Dead, and brings to life this epic tale, based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller. Images dissolve into classic paintings and frescoes, as if touched by great masters,  and virtual images bleed to life: this dance between spectacular virtual reality and gritty realism give the film its frenetic heartbeat. The script, a blend of mythology, Greek tragedy, poetry, and power speeches that could have been written for dictators, politicians and presidents, give the film a soulful  tranquillity. It's a welcome ode to peace in a time where the world stands divided, and defies the gravity of Hollywood and conventional heroism. Disc 1 includes audio commentary by director Zach Snyder. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE ***** "I didn't set out to make a children's movie; I set out to make a movie about childhood," says innovative visionary Spike Jonze, whose big-screen adaptation of the captivating Maurice Sendak classic was truly a labor of love. This spectacular and imaginative adaptation of the most beloved books of all time tells a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in.  The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are.  Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions.   The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule.  When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy.  Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought. In it, he further explores the themes Sendak introduced and which Jonze believes remain relevant to every generation.  "It's about what it's like to be eight or nine years old and trying to figure out the world, the people around you, and emotions that are sometimes unpredictable or confusing--which is really the challenge of negotiating relationships all your life," he says.  "It's no different at that age."  Read more   The fantastic bonus features includes interviews that takes you behind the scenes and into Jonze land.
