THE CRAZIES **** There is something refreshing about remakes of classic films. This potent reinvention of The Crazies is a story as real as the headlines hitting the news today. It shows that sometimes, the future allows the past to resonate with a horrific new reality. What makes The Crazies relevant is that it is set in an idyllic farming community that has everything going for it until it's torn apart from the inside out. Imagine the consequences of the drinking water in your area polluted with a biochemical virus that turns neighbours into monstrous killers? It's this familiarity that connects with audiences and sets The Crazies apart from other similar films.  Yes, we all are scared of the Boogeyman or some demented serial slasher turning extreme violence into an exciting funfest, but nothing is more frightening than an unseen and undefeated killer.Eisner's new, nail-biting reimagining of Romero's classic movie goes even further than the original in creating a terrifying world in which an experimental bio-weapon brings out its victims' darkest thoughts and puts them into action. Reality is bent and stretched in some extreme ways, but the core of this movie, the inception of the movie, is based in a reality that could happen.  Fortunately Eisner does not turn The Crazies into a bloodfest, but rather focuses on the psychological warfare between ordinary people losing their minds. Eisner keeps the suspense to tight that you can cut it with a knife, delivering some terrific moments of pure terror that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Not that The Crazies defies its genre. After watching The Crazies, you will ensure to lock pitchforks and electric tools safely out of harm's way. The pitchfork impaling is a truly horrific ordeal that will be long remembered by horror fans and end in the hall of fame along other memorable impaling from horror classics like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween (all of whom underwent a similar modern reinvention) Read more
CRY WOLF
**** A refreshing take on the teenage horror genre that will keep you guessing up to the last frame. Nobody believes a liar - even when they're telling the truth. When a young woman is found murdered, a group of local high school students decide to further scare their classmates by spreading online rumors that a serial killer called "The Wolf" is on the loose. By describing "The Wolf's" next victims, the students' game is to see how many people they can convince - and if anyone will uncover the lie. But when the described victims actually do start turning up dead, suddenly no one knows where the lies end and the truth begins. As someone or something begins hunting the students themselves, the game turns terrifyingly real. EDEN LAKE
***** Eden Lake is a "relentlessly tense and immaculately paced" horror-thriller about modern youth gone wild. When a young couple goes to a remote wooded lake for a romantic getaway, their quiet weekend is shattered by an aggressive group of local kids. Rowdiness quickly turns to rage as the teens terrorize the couple in unimaginable ways, and a weekend outing becomes a bloody battle for survival. 29-year-old British director James Watkins's directorial debut is an overtly moralistic thriller that is as frightening as it is shocking. Watkins got his start by writing the low-budget My Little Eye, a promising (if far from perfect) entry in a former genre fad: horror's twist on reality TV. Appropriately, he has written the second installment of The Descent (another inspiration here), which hits theaters later this year. With Eden Lake, the young talent proves he's a horror force to be reckoned with. Despite similarities with many other genre films, Eden Lake is a lean, mean, fighting machine. Because we care so much about the two young lovers fighting for their lives in the woods, the film frequently becomes too hard to watch. That may limit the replay value for some, but young writer/director James Watkins has crafted a brutal slice of '70s-inspired survival--complete with some indelible sequences like the ending, which will stay with you forever.
FRIDAY THE 13TH (Extended Cut)
****  The crazed Jason is back like you have never seen him before, viciously and mercilessly seeking bloody revenge in Marcus Nispel's brutal onslaught. Ardent horror buffs will delight in this imaginative and invigorating re-imaging. It also introduces this popular cult classic to new generation that will most definitely start watching the original saga on DVD. Thankfully Nispel is original and fresh in his approach and brilliantly allows the memory of the predecessors to form the background of a new chapter in the Voorhees legacy.  Fans will equally enjoy the re-interpretation of iconic symbols like Jason's hockey mask, and the maternal bond that enforces his monstrous blood lust. Not for the faint hearted.  Searching for his missing sister, Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki) heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake, where he enters the domain of one of the most terrifying specters in American film history--the infamous killer who haunts Crystal Lake, armed with a razor-sharp machete… Jason Voorhees. Described as the 'undisputed master of horror' for cult horror films like Tenebrae and Phenomena, Argento delivers another serial killer story with Max von Sydow as a retired detective who is asked to assist in the investigation of a series of brutal murders that leads him down a spiralling path of terror. It's a highly stylistic, sometimes completely over the top, and mostly pure indulgence.  In this film Argento's unique style is evident a he creates a visual  nightmare recalling favourite elements from his previous films: the black gloved killer, the selection of shiny knives against red material, close ups of bloody weapons and beautiful women.
